Hey Scholars,
Two Weeks until Spring Break!!! This week's topic is global climate change. The current scientific view point is that our climate is slowly warming. Prior to this current belief, there were scholars that thought we were headed for an ice age. Even movies such as The Day After Tomorrow depict this. This week we will reinforce Science's Current Perspective but for this week's post I want you to find alternate opinions on this subject. Post the link where you found your info.
Happy Spring

http://www.2012endofdays.org/general/Predictions-for-2012.php
One of the theories discussed on this site state that in 2012, The Earth will undergo a magnetic field shift, reversing the polarity of the planet. This essentially means that the world would begin to spin backwards, reversing the order of our seasons. This reversal of the seasons would lead to plant and animal species going into shock from the extremely unusual weather conditions, and only a few very hardy species would be able to survive this type of misfortune.
As this is a Mayan prophecy based off of spiritual and astronomical-type things, I don't see where human beings could cause much change or influence this occurance whatsoever.

This article I found was a debate that was fifty minutes long. The proposition was that gobal warming was not a crisis and there where three experts debating for and three debating aginst the point and there where some very good points made on both sides.

I found this article pretty interesting because it actually states that the author strongly disagrees with Al Gore's movie about global warming. According to him, Al Gore hyped on CO2 too much when in truth, water vapor is really the most important greenhouse gas. He believes that we are rather experiencing global cooling so people should be worried more about the earth getting cold to the point of no return 50 years from now. Apollo 14's Mission Scientist Phil Chapman believes that "there is a close correlation between variations on the sunspot cycle and Earth's climate." He believes that reduced sunspots are whats curbing temperatures. NASA also said some places in the world endured brutal ice and snow such as China and in 2007, the ice between Canada and southwest Greenland spread dramatically - a complete contradiction to Al Gore's presentation about polar ice caps melting.
Despite all the scientific reasoning and real life examples of what might be an indicator of global cooling stated in this article, I still find it hard to believe that the earth is not going through global warming. It doesn't change my opinion on climate change in any kind of way and I actually find it quite ridiculous that they are worried about the exact opposite of what we are.

This site described the concept of the Milankovich cycles which chronicals the cycling of Ice Ages interupted by periods of warming. This concept claims to use data from at least 200,000 years ago and critizes global warming concepts because those only use data from the past few thousand years. This site claims CO2 levels will rise for another 800 years-ish before CO2 levels drop in response to colder ocean temperatures and the occurance of the next ice age.

This was an article about a man who says global warming is not caused by humans. simply by natural cycles. He was very angry that children are being told in schools that its all humans fault. He provided facts showing that CO2 levels were higher before us. he also said that Al Gores movie was all a lie and the scientific evidence he gave was all a hoax.

The article I found claims that our main focus should not be global warming, but plant shifting. They claim that actions such as drilling and removing water from subterranean aquifers have greater damage than the idea of increasing carbon emissions, but they are the main cause of the increased shifting in tectonic plates. This increased shifting accounts for the the increased numbers of earthquakes occuring and the fact that these recent hurricanes have been constantly scoring extremely high on the quake scale. They predict that tsunamis will become more common and more devistating. This source claims that global warming scientists met in secret to discuss this, and came to the conclusion that Haiti was only the beginning of this potentially life ending problem.

I found an interesting article that described the son as the culprit of global warming, saying that surrounding plants like Mars and Pluto are also getting warmer.

An alternate platform on the stance of global warming says that the conspiracy just may be standing on false data or no data at all. In order for skeptic scientists to express their uncertainty, a new and very different conference on global warming will be held in New York City. The theme of the conference will be that there is no scientific consensus on the causes or likely consequences of global warming…

ReplyDeletethis article talks about global warming being caused by the burning of fossil fuels and forests causing carbon dioxide gases to get into the atmospere.

Trenberth informs us that "climate is changing." No problem there. Mean temperatures rose steeply in the decades before 1940 and dropped from 1940 to about 1975. Most climatologists agree that these changes were of natural origin--although Trenberth tries to present them as of human origin. But then he claims that "global mean temperature is rising." Not so. The weather satellite data, the only truly global data set we have, actually show a global cooling trend during the past 19 years

This article first talks about how some scientists are saying that we are not entering into global cooling but global warming. They take into concideration the retreating ice at the poles and wonder why people would think it is cooling when the ice is melting. Also they are saying that this increase in greenhouse gasses is due to human impact, I think that it has a slight effect due to humans but not all of the greenhouse gases in my opinion can be attributed to human activity.
This article that i found was very interesting. This person took a rational approach to the situation. He explains how everyone is 90% accurate, and that 10% leaves a lot of room for error. He poses the question of if the world is gradually warming then “Why is east Antarctica getting colder?” He shows an alternate opinion on global warming and i found it very interesting.

Rep. Sensenbrenner is right -- a major deal in Copenhagen or a comparable domestic global warming bill would be all economic pain for no environmental gain. If President Obama wants to truly represent the interests of the American people, he would not sign onto an agreement with any real teeth.
ReplyDeleteThe reality is that ratcheting down carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel use would be prohibitively expensive. The citizens of none of the 192 nations represented here at Copenhagen really want this done to them. Not Americans, whose concern about global warming is waning while concern about the economy and jobs remains justifiably high. Not Europeans, whose actions put the lie to their words -- many EU countries have failed to reduce emissions under the existing Kyoto Protocol but are arguing for tighter targets in Copenhagen. And certainly not the Chinese, Indians, and others from developing nations who insist on no binding reductions for themselves but expect to come away from Copenhagen with promises of massive foreign aid.
The last point makes the Copenhagen agenda an even lousier deal for the American people. In addition to a multi-trillion dollar energy tax (higher gasoline prices and electric bills, over a million net job losses), developing nations have demanded 0.5 to 1 percent of GDP in aid annually -- 70 to 140 billion from the US to help them deal with global warming. Quite a price tag even in the best of economic times, but far worse given the lingering recession and 10 percent unemployment.
And for what? Climategate - the release of emails and other documents showing gross misconduct amongst some the key scientists responsible for the "official" UN science that was to be relied upon at Copenhagen -- only adds to doubts that global warming really is an impending crisis. And even if it was, increased emissions from China would swamp any reductions undertaken by the US, no matter how costly.

I couldnt really find a quote or opinon on what someone thought was the reason for the climate change but however, i founnd out whats the public top ten beliefs of the climate change..

ReplyDeleteGlobal Warming is getting to the point that if we all do not change then we will all help in bringing down our home. We will continue to keep on pumping billions and billions of tons of CO2 emissions until it is far too late to change it back to the way it was.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Vladimir Shaidurov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, The overall temperature has had a slight decrease over past 140 years except for the 20th century. It is not due to the increase of CO2 but to the change in ice concentration in the atmosphere. Shaidurov believes that H2O has more of an impact then CO2 does.

ReplyDeleteThis man's viewpoint was summed up as follows: From what I have gathered from all these predictions is that there is going to be ‘A CHANGE’ in the way humans have neglected to care for the earth. The Creator will soon cause mankind’s destructive ways to come to an end. Do not be afraid when you see these things coming, in just a short time the Creator will ‘Destroy those destroying the earth.’ Once again the responsibility to care for the earth will be placed on the chosen people. Sickness, Morning and Outcry will be no more. The earth will return to a paradise condition as it was intended when first created.
