Week 8: Is there an Eruption in Natural Disasters?

Hey Scholars!!

This week's topic is on Geosphere and specifically Natural Disasters and Mineral Mining. My Question for Discussion this week is in the title of this Post. Do you think there is a coincidence between the recent decades Natural Disasters/ Weird Weather and Global Warming? Give your explanation and if you use others research/info. make sure you cite it (properly).

Yes i think it is a coincidence. We have risen the worlds temperature by atleast 1 degree. This change may seem little but is drastic. We have carbon raising because of this. The world might not be used to the temperature change so it responds negatively. Almost all disasters result from temperature changes, hurricanes and tornados from warm and cold wink, so on.

  3. I don't think that the weird weather and global warming have a correlation at all. I believe that global warming is just the natural fluctuation of the average temperatures of the earth. The same would go with weather. Its just a random event. Yes our pollution could cause some crazy chain reaction to cause some big disaster but that's a very far fetched idea.

I think that there has been in an increase in weather, oceanic and land based natural disasters because of our impact on the rate of global warming. Our ever expanding population is causes us to burn more and more fuel and mining more and more land to meet our demands, this is causing an increase in green houses gasses and is completely throwing our atmospheric conditions out of whack. Plus, because of mining we are deforesting many large areas causing an increased risk in land slides. It is no coincidence that the number of natural disasters have increased over the years, and if we continue doing all of these things more natural disasters will occur on an even more frequent basis.

  5. I do believe that there is a connection between global warming and the past decade's natural disasters. So far there has been the 2005 tsnumai, the string of hurricanes, most specifically Katrina, and the Chilean earthquake. This disasters appear to have been happening more recently that normal. I believe this has something to do with global warming.

As the temperature increases due to the green house effect the ice caps are continuing to melt. The melting of the ice caps alert us to the fact that the world is heating up, and the pressures of this heat are causing affects such as volcanoes becoming more alert.

The signs are present showing that global warming is causing more disasters. The regular diasters such as hurricanes (which fluxate throughout the years) are becoming more and more frequent as the temperature of teh earth increases.

  6. I believe that everything that happens within our closed system "Earth" must have something to do with eachother. The physical and chemical processes that occur effect the Earth's appearance and cycles/functions. However, under the concern of global warming, I havent stumbled upon a credible enough explanation as to the connectoin between natural processes/wierd weather with global warming other than the idea that the exteme high/low temperatures are result of global warming.

Personally I dont think that there is a connection between the two. There is evidence that says that the Earth is actually cooling which suggests that the "warming" was apart of the Earth's natural cycle. I think the weird weather is just that; weird weather that people didnt expect. I think that it is just the cycling of nature and that global warming isnt actually something that exists in the terms we think of today

  8. Sooo i definately believe that global warming is connected to the natural disasters and weird weather because i understand that global warming does not mean warmer weather only. It means extremes in weather. Studies have proven that over the last few decades, there have been more and more storms, like hurricanes. The global temperature average has also been rising, extremely slowly, but the melting ice caps increase the ocean, which will cause more flooding and damage during the increasing amount of storms.

On a different note, people have also said that global warming isn't real because weather goes in a bigger cycle than originally thought, like all of this warming and increase of storms and stuff all happened in the past too, considering that the earth has supposedly been around for like millions of years. So i believe both could be true. But really global warming seems more likely if you think about the usage of natural resources and all the waste being produced.

My theory or opinion is that the patterns of natural disasters over the the thousands and thousands of years that Earth has existed is to sustain itself. The Earth is naturally balancing out the world to keep it sustainable for life. Like Hurricane Katrina hit the southeastern region of the US. Wasn't there oil mining and some other harmful digging of the earth there?...Its a reach from being true but its not improbable.

  11. Here's your daily dose of science:

I found an interesting thoery that our strange climate is not actaully caused by Global Warming. It says that we are more effected by solar sunspot activity that causes warming and cooling trends
(in long cycles of about a hundred years or so) and that since the mayans focused many of their predictions on the suns activity, the sudden apocolyptic event predicted for 2012 is actually a new sun cycle predicted to cause mass cooling due to low sunspot activity. I think the crazy weather is caused by the earths stabalization system as we enter this new cooling cycle. :)

  12. Honestly, I don't think the weather is any weirder than it's always been. Weather has always been weird and unpredictable and so forth. I feel like there isn't any correlation. If I could jump into my AP Statistic terminology I would say there are lurking variables going unnoticed. In my book, it's all coincidental.

  13. I believe that the correlation between natural disasters in recent years and global warming is no coincidence. The average temperature in many regions of the world has increased. With the warming temperatures, warmer oceans have helped hurricanes become more powerful at a faster pace. In addition, because the air is often dryer, forest fires can start with ease. A main contributor to the increase in average global temperatures is the excessive emission of carbon.

I believe that there is a link between Global Warming and natural disasters. The worse Global Warming becomes, the more issues the world has with earthquakes, hurricanes, tusamies, and other natural yet danerous occurances. I believet that the harmful actions we do that have created global warming are some of the reasons we have seen more and more natural disasters that are becoming more powerful.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I believe that they are both connected. When the temperature rises, it causes there to be more hurricanes because of the raise in the water temperature. I also believe that things happen for a reason, they don't just happen because they want to. We tend to be the big cause of global warming, and that's kindof how these things happen. By human impact. So I personally believe that there is a coincidence between the two.

I would say that many natural disasters such as mudslides and landslides do have a link to weather. For example a rain storm is likely to loosen the soil around mountains and steep terrain which may cause a mudslide. Some of this weather can be caused by global warming which may indirectly change weather patterns. So while a rain storm which loosens the soil in steep terrain is not necessarily weird, the fact that it is caused by global warming makes it weird.

  17. No I do not think that there is a coincidnece between global warming and natural disaters because reseach has shown that there is no link between the two. There has been controversy between wrongly accusing global warming and natural disasters.

  19. I do believe there is a coincidence between recent natural disasters/weird weather and global warming.
I believe that global warming is a catalyst in natural disasters and a leading cause in the weird weather the world has been experiencing. Global warming heats our oceans which makes the likely hood of a hurricane forming increase, and it also heats the surface which results in increased evaporation, thus resulting in heavier rainfall which can lead to serious flooding. Since the temperature has been increasing, dry areas such as california have been prone to wildfires more than ever and the world has experienced more heatwaves and droughts as in case with sudan and france.

    ReplyDelete
  20. My personal opinion about this topic is that global warming does affect recent natural disasters. Global warming is the increase heating of the Earth's atmosphere by greenhouse gases. I think that the increase in temperature increases the intensity of natural disasters to make them far worse. One example are the hurricanes in the Atlantic ocean. As the ocean temperatures rise from global warming the hurricanes start to become stronger and stronger. One problem that affects the intensity and occurences of natural disasters is abrupt climate changes. "Abrupt climate change refers to sudden (on the order of decades), large changes in some major component of the climate system, with rapid, widespread effects" (EPA-Global Warming). Occurences of abrupt climate changes can change weather patterns and can cause serious natural disasters. "According to the Natural Research Council, greenhouse warming and other human alterations of the Earth system may increase the possibility of large, abrupt, and unwelcome regional or global climatic events. The abrupt changes of the past are not fully explained yet, and climate models typically underestimate the size, speed, and extent of those changes. Hence, future abrupt changes cannot be predicted with confidence, and climate surprises are to be expected" (EPA-Global Warming). This is most likely the explanation for the wierd weather that people have been experiencing.

  21. Yes, I think there is some correlation between global warming and the strange weather of recent years. It is true that such disasters and weather have always existed, but it is occurring more often and more consistently. This year is also on its was of becoming the warmest year of all time, which I don't think is a coincidence.

  22. Global Warming definitely effects climate change. More carbon dioxide is released from the oceans as a result of heat, and this causes an increase in the Greenhouse Effect. They are almost directly related. Also, at the same time as the weather is colder, more Carbon Dioxide is sucked in by the ocean making it even cooler. So there is definitely a relationship between weird weather and global warming, although no one is sure which one causes the other.

  23. I think that they may have some relation towards eachother but on a minor scale. I think that most of the recent natural disasters, weird weather, and so called global warming are all a coincidence. The natural disasters that have just recently happened, happened because they are bound to happen eventually, not because of some stupid theory. Most of what happens today weather it be a natural disaster, weird weather, or ice caps melting are just things that happen and we have just been oh so fortunate to experience them recently.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I believe that global warming is linked to the recent natural disasters in the last decade. Hurricanes form over hot water and since global warning would also raise water temperatures, hurricanes would be more likely to form.(How Hurricanes Form) Also because of those warmer oceans, hurricanes have been unusually strong since water temperature is directly related to hurricane strength(Carey).

  25. I do not think that decant from natural disasters and global warming are similar. Global warming is caused from some natural causes but mostly from us treating our environment horrible. Natural disasaters are cause by natural things nothing to do with us.

  26. Yes, I do believe that it is just a coincidence. The weather has always been unpredictable, it's just that people never looked into it. I'm pretty sure that natural disasters and gloobal warming have been present throughout earth's history(ice age), yet when scientists publically release what they believe, it's bound to create a stir.

  27. Yes, I think that global warming has some effect on the natural disasters and weird weather that we have been having. It is proven that when the ice caps melt, earthquakes and tsunamis can be triggered. Also, this increases the amount of floods per year.

i do not believe that natural diasters and global warming have anything to do with each other. i believe that global warming is a natural process that occurs on the earth. just like a lightbulb. the longer it's left on the hotter it gets. when natural diasters do occur they are completely random. thats why they are natural. the temp of the day may affect the weater but our weather is a day by day occurance to.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i think that there really isnt enough information for someone to say that theres is definatly a connection between gobal warming and natural disasters. i do think though that global warming could in the future cause some problems for humans living in specific areas. for example, if ice caps were to melt due to global warming then the water would raise high enough for the southern parts of louisiana to underwater.

    ReplyDelete
  30. In a sense, it all seems like Natural disasters are caused by the whole global warming idea and stuff like that, etc., greenhouse gases, stuff like that. But in all actuality, global warming has been long disproved, people want to radically change how humans live everyday life, without considering the consequences of what could possibly happen. I believe, as well as many other scientists, the world is just going through a cycle. And it will balance back out again.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I believe that it isn't just coincidence. I mena, there has been research that shows that we've been having more hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, and earthquakes in recent years, and the temperature of the Earth has risen one degree. It doesn't sound like much, but it really is a drastic change.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Because of our reasource use, our ozone layer now has holes in it. And because of these holes, our Earth's temperature is rising. This causes more natural disasters. Our Earth's system is fragile. Just one thing can tip the balance, and it could all come crashing down.

  35. I believe that the weird weather and "global warming" are just coincidental. There have actually been studies that show the Earth as a whole is actual cooling and the warming is just a part of one of its natural cycles.

    ReplyDelete
  36. There has been proof that states that in the past year the Earth has cooled around 65 hundredths of a degree Centigrade in the past year, this cuts off almost all claims of global warming. so if the world is actually cooling then the weird weather must not be related to the global warming.
