Wow! This is really interesting! I like the idea of biodegradable water bottles. It's really cool. Also, what I found to be useful was to reuse plastic water bottles. I mean, as long as you clean them before each reuse, they aren't harmless.
ReplyDeleteIn our AP Earth class we've recently learned about e-waste and the harmful effects it can have if it is not properly disposed of. I think it is great that people are becoming informed of these problems. Hopefully it will catch on world wide and we can reduce the pollution in the developing countries that get stuck with our e-waste.
ReplyDeleteThis vid is soo cute! But it did have me thinking. Everytime me and my mother go grocery shopping we always forget to bring our reusable bags. Its is probaly because we know the store will provide us with bags when we check out...
ReplyDeleteAbout Kiva:
ReplyDeleteA prime example of a simple, inexpensive way to help fellow humans around the world, great article!

I posted on Dave's Blog !!!! :
ReplyDeleteI really agree with recycling or reusing old cell phones. A little while ago when I learned about this I talked my parents into giving me their old cellphones every time they upgrade, and also to upgrade less often, that way my family and I as a whole go through less cellphones a year. This,I think could be a form of reusing. We also looked into ways that we can properly dispose of the ones we dont want anymore, ways like those listened in the link above. The next step is convincing others to do the same!

I commented on one of his blogs, "it would be awesome if more people would start riding bikes or walking more places, or if scientists would create a car that runs on something more renewable and safe than oil."
ReplyDelete" i have tons of phones just sitting in my drawer at home and i never knew what to do with them. i asked my phone company if they took old phones to recycle and they said now they take old phone batteries and would soon be collecting whole phones. thanks for the tips!"
ReplyDeleteIn my APES class we were talking about how you shouldn't throw aways cell phones, tv's, comptures, ect. I just think this is interesting because it's something simple that everyone should do to help out the enviorment. I just think people should be informed more about thi soption.

Can a "normal" American family achieve zero waste? Practically.
ReplyDeleteMy Comment:
Wow, who knew that a family could actually achieve zero waste?! This makes me seem like a wasteful person compared to them. Hmmmm...maybe I should take some of their advice and live a better lifestyle.
I found this article very interesting. I have always known that water bottles are harmful to the environment and that is why I have been using a reuseable water bottle for many years now. I did not realize along with many other I am sure that you can actually save money by using a reuseable water bottle. I know now that whenever I am trying to convince someone to switch to a reuseable water bottle that I will bring up that point.
ReplyDeleteArticle "Stop drinking bottled Water"
I commented on one saying: "I like the idea of donating the old phones to orgnziations and what not! especially the soldiers!"

I really agree with all that you had to say about how easy it is to use reusable bags if you just retrain yourself to do so, I always have my reusable bags by the door and some just in the back of my car. But I really should invest in those mesh bags for produce and corn based kitchen bags.
ReplyDeletei commented sayin how it would help people be informed on what is out there and effecting not just the enviroment but also peoples health
ReplyDeletein my APES class i recently wrote a childrens book about all the e-waste that goes to china and affects the people over there,i think choosin more reliable places likethe ones youve listed to recycle to would help stop this problem a lot
ReplyDeleteThat's super interesting! I have never thought about the correlation to people that do not "believe" global warming and business owners to some company harming the environment. I have always assumed they were just in denial. Very good article, thanks for the share~
ReplyDeleteThis is what I posted:
ReplyDeleteI like how people have the choice to recycle their old cell phones instead of just throwing out in the trash which in up in landfills which are not good or benefical to humankind. I myself went through five phones this year because of defaults and mess ups in the phones and each one got returned to the company. It never occured to me to ask them if they were recycling them or not but on my next visit to them i will gladly bring the question up.
I commented on his blog about alternate resources for vehicles "It would be awsome to see all of the cars in the US run on electricity. Mabey if we work on the elecetric battery to make it more reliable we will see that some day".
ReplyDeleteI posted on the blog.
ReplyDeleteGiving your cell phones away can lead to problems somewhere else if they don't dispose of it properly. Nut the overall option of recycling is good.
I commented on a link to an article about the Puente Hills Landfill: "I loved the progression of this article. It starts out with a man who loves his job at the landfill and who really appreciates being able to push around mountains of trash in a huge vehicle every day. It then makes you think...what kind of trash makes up that mountain and why is there such a need for a pile that big? Being in Environmental Science has really made me think about what I throw away and where it goes. :)"

ReplyDeleteI previously learned that prevention is better than cleaning up, so I believe that the problem should be delt at the source. We should limit the number of cell phones purchased very year
i looked over his blog and saw many intersting things that many people talked about relating towards the earth or ways to help it. when i heard about his collection of garbae trash for a year, and i found that quite intriguing... i dont think i could ever do that, but i think it is a very relevant way to see how much daily consumption an average person does per year.
ReplyDelete"I love things like this! Helping fund small projects is one of my favorite things to do to help people out."-Posted under KIVA
ReplyDeleteI posted about the water bottles; "I never really noticed how much plastic i waste by all the water bottles i drink until i seen the calculations. It makes me wanna make a differance and let everyone know".
ReplyDeleteThe video was my favorite not only because it was true but i also was able to relate being that i work at a grocery store myself. We could save our earth and much more time by using the reusable bags. I say this because 9 times out of 10 people dont recycle the plastic bags, they just throw them away. Also people who come grocery shopping and use a bag for only one item, really just a complete waste.

I enjoyed the video personally because i can relate. I work at Food Lion and majority of the people i can assure you use the bags and throw them away once they get home. They are pretty much a wasted cause. Unlike my family we reuse them for other doings around our home. Reusable bags are not only better for the environment but they are also convenient for both light grocery shopping and heavy:)
ReplyDeleteI commented and said: Wow that's pretty cool! I've never heard of such a thing. I'll definitely consider using Kiva in the future!

ReplyDeleteHi Dave!
I really like your recommendations for how to easily implement sustainable living into my eating habits. I think it's really cool that you brought tuberware when you picked up local meat! Anymore suggestions? =]

Thanks! Start with the 8.2 things you can do and then there are plenty more things to accomplish throughout the site. Once you start thinking in that mode, it comes pretty easily. Just start by opening up your mind and questioning what you think is "normal".
This article was great. It talks about a man who loves his job at the landfill, which is pushing piles of trash into a big truck. Environmental Science really makes you think about what you throw away, where it goes, and what happens to it.
ReplyDeleteOn the video about hydro fracking I said: You know there's a problem when you can light your own tap water on fire... And the heads of the companies that cause it are speechless when quoted their own words.
ReplyDeleteAnd then I said something like: Well, that's America :|
On the article about hydro fracking I said: You know there's something wrong when you can light your own tap water on fire... And the heads of the companies that cause it are speechless when quoted their own words.
ReplyDeleteThen I said something like: Well, that's America :|
i think its amazing how they can make printable solar panels i wonder how long before we have solar panels for everything
ReplyDeleteI think reusable bags are going to catch on, eventually. And this goes to show that being sustainable is possible. It just requires some effort and breaking bad habits.
ReplyDeleteI hope they vote in favor of banning the plastic bags... that would make Los Angeles a much better place to live and to visit! Please post your thoughts about this topic to the week ten blog on Mr Dillman's blogspot www.dillmanapenvironmental.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThanks!
"people really should think to recycle even when they aren't at home. There are many people who always recycle at their house but don't even think about it when they are away from home. It's still bad for the environment."
ReplyDeleteLos Angeles Finally Stepping Up - Finally Ready To Ban Plastic Bags!
ReplyDeleteL.A has a big population and having plastic bags only degrades their enviroment. I think we should go back to the old fashioned way or use recyclable bags.
We have been learning about e-waste and the harmful effects that is has on our environment. It is really great that people are beginning to realize how important it is to recycle as much as possible and begin to pay more attention to have we treat our earth.
ReplyDeletei agree with tyler, i think that north carolina should make moves on banning plastic bags in our area to or at least say that we need to reuse them...unfortunatley its all about convenience..
