Week 6: Is there an Eruption in Natural Disasters?

Hey Scholars!!

Hard to believe it is already the end of the 1st six weeks. Sooner than you know it will be Spring Break!!! This week's topic is on Geosphere and specifically Natural Disasters and Mineral Mining. My Question for Discussion this week is in the title of this Post. Do you think there is a coincidence between the recent decades Natural Disasters/ Weird Weather and Global Warming? Give your explanation and if you use others research/info. make sure you cite it.

According to the article that I read Global Warming changes the pressure of the atmosphere, which in turn affects temperature, and a significant amount of rainfall in some areas. Temperature is a measure of kinetic energy so changes in temperature due to global warming also changes energy, which could explain the weird weather we have been experiencing here in North Carolina and around the world for the past few years.

  2. The other day, I was having a conversation about this with two of my friends. Because of our religious backgrounds, we were thinking that it may have to do with the rapture. There have been many HUGE natural disasters that have been coming frequently over the past fews that have devesatated many. During our conversation we also incorperated the Mayan's belief of the world refreshing itself in 2012. The natural disasters and weird weather could be the early signs of this upcoming renewal of life.

  4. Well, I think it's like a pattern. Around here, we only get hurricanes like every two to three years and it has been a few years since we have had one. So maybe every natural disaster has a pattern like that.

  5. It might not be that natural disasters are occuring more frequently, we just have better tools to measure them, wider communication to report them, and more publicity to promote them. I also know that I have not being paying attention to natural disasters until the past few years. You tend to notice something more if you are looking for it.

  6. Well I agree with Kelsey with the statement that you tend to notice something if you're searching for it. I also think that there has been weird weather lately such as the it being hot one day and extremely cold the next (and this can be due to any tremendous of reasons such as shift in moisture in the air. I think that as a result of human activities have not helped reduce the severity of these natural disasters. Such as destroying coral reefs; which buffer against destructive tsunamis. I think as a result of these disasters taking such a tremendous toll on human lives (the book mentioned how 228,000 people died in 2004 from the tsunami and 278,000 people have died from a tsunami since 1900-2008) we have put more emphasis on it then it has in the past (just as Kelsey mentioned).

  7. I believe that the patterns are just a coincedence. I think that weather is uncontrollable and so is climate......For example if every year during the same month it always has a hurricane, blaming that on global warming could be proven wrong if for the next five years you did EVERYTHING to prevent global warming, i still think there would be a hurricane during the same time period. That is just like saying that we can create our own climates and weather, and also decide what natural disasters can and cannot occur.....I THINK NOT

  8. I think that global warming has impacted the weather patterns a lot of the years. With all the changes in temperature and climates its obviously do to global warming. since we started poluting the are at a rapid pace the weather patterns have been very sporatic.

  9. nooooooo! my post was deleted.
i think that global warming really does not have any impact on natural disasters. and realllly one of the reasons why---i have to agree with ms. kelsey rupp---is that places that do have natural disasters are getting more publicity. ....i had a good argument before my post magically deleted. i dont remember what i put.
due to average temperatures dropping in the winter, i believe that the earth is going into a cooling period rather than a warming period.

If only I believed in global warming I could provide an explanation for coincidences that may exist between the natural disasters that have occurred in recent decades and global warming. But since I do not I cannot generate such an elucidation. Like all natural disasters, hurricanes and wildfires have taken an enormous toll in lives and property damage in recent decades. However, I do not believe that global warming can be accountable for this. Yes, warmer temperatures can create conditions that may amplify the effects of these natural disasters, but I think that it is from natural causes not from global warming. For example, wildfires that have consumed cities in Southern California have started because forests have grown unmanaged. Grasses, underbrush, and dead trees have served as kindling for these fires not global warming.

i think there may be some coincidence between the recent Natural Disasters and global warming, but only slightly. Most natural disasters are uncontrollable, and we cant do anything to stop them. the fact that climates are changing, wont change the occurrence of earthquakes or how strong they are. On the other hand; We would still have hurricanes, but some hurricanes might be worse because the water temp is higher, allowing the storm to gain strength. Humans are helping global warming become more severe. i believe, most natural disasters would happen with or without global warming.

  12. I believe there is the same amount of natural disasters that have been occurring since the dawn of time. We have only recently as a human society, started to record these disasters. With new technology we are seeing the effects of mother nature in her full force.

  13. In past years, I have written many papers on this same question. Although I do not have the sources i used to find my information from those papers, I still remember the information.

I think that there is no coincidence between the two. I think global warming is the direct cause of the climate changes we are experiencing. Global warming is cuasing these wierd weather pattern because of ways we are emmitting CO2. we are cutting down trees which changes weather paterns in that area but it also adds to the CO2 in the atmosphere. Plus acid rain from these carbon emmissions with the warming of the Earth has caused further deforestation and changes in the circulation of the air masses around the Earth.

  14. Truthfully before i was post on the ap enviromental roster I didn't really respect what my family and I live on. Us as the human race take advantage of our home. We use way too many resources that are nonrenewable and will not be back on earth until 2 generations from now. Our current generation is gonna have kids that have nothing in life. The earth will be almost desolate. Everything that we currently do to get to our "needed" resources is very harmful to the earth in one way or another. Now don't get me wrong im not a hippie. but i sure do want to preserve the earth for as long as possible. i believe that everything we have done is gonna come with reprocussions.

I know this has been discussed in numerous threads but here's a fresh one.

I live in Northwest Arkansas. We are gearing up for a winter storm that local stations are calling so significant its a "100 year storm" But wait, we just had one of those last year at this time.

I just saw on the news that for the 1st time in history, a state, Kentucky, has been declared a disaster area 3 times in one year, in 2009. If this storm does what is predicted, there is a good chance the same will happen again. That would make 4 times in 13 months. I know this is concentrating on a small area, but it seems the whole world is experiencing weird weather.

Add to this the Haiti quake and the 2004 tsunami, disaters in proportions that we are only supposed to see at the least every 100 years and it seems something is up.

So whats your take,is it endtimes related, climate change,or just increased media coverage. Lets keep this civil. I am more looking for peoples opinion instead of a religious rant or trying to disprove global warming, I mean climate change.....

Yeah, i do think there is coincidence between global warming and the weather and natural disasters. Currently we have experience quite a few earthquakes and I think global warming may have caused it. An article written on global warming and plate tectonics found on http://www.physorg.com/news129822894.html states that as temp. rises on the earth's surface, tectonic plates become more unstable , thus causing our frequent and current earthquakes.

despite the good arguements regarding this topic, i do not believe that global warming totally has an effect on natural disasters. since global warming is such a big environmental issue nowadays, i think people tend to use it as one of the possible explanations of the recent occuring natural disasters. people try to find good reasoning behind it and at some instances, it does make sense. but keep in mind that global warming is caused by what us, humans, do to our environment and how we use carbon dioxide where in natural disasters are completely uncontrollable and cannot be caused by any kind of human activities. i do not believe that the change in weather patterns due to global warming has anything to do with how earth and its ground works itself.

  18. There is indeed a connection between gobal warming and natural disasters. Scientist believe melting glaciers will set off avalanches, floods and mud flows in the Alps and other mountain ranges; widespread erosion; while disappearing Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets threaten to let loose underwater landslides, triggering tsunamis. At the same time the disappearance of ice caps will change the pressures acting on the Earth's crust and set off volcanic eruptions across the globe.

  19. I think that global warming has a small impact on the natural disasters. Natural disasters are uncontrollable and we can't stop them. I think that maybe global warming can affect hurricane strength tho by the water temp bein higher due to the warming other then that climate changes aren't going to affect natural disasters like tornadoes tsunamis and earthquakes. We are the cause of global warming due to all the carbon dioxide that we are releasing into the atmosphere. Even if we really cut down on the carbon we release the natural disasters would occur they have been occuring since before global warming and they are going to keep occuring

  20. Personally, I believe global warming is a continuous cylce. Throughout our history, temperature is always fluctuation from warmer weather to cooler weather, and this sudden increase in temperature is nothing that shouldn't have been expected. I do beleive, however, that there is such a thing as human-enhanced global warming and that our constant drilling of the earth's surface and burning of fossil fuels does have an effect on our earth, but I do not believe that it is to the degree that the media protrays. Furthermore, I feel that humans', as a whole, disregard towards living sustainably and nonchalant demeanor towards replenshing the natural resources we feel inclined to deplete will have a bigger effect on tectonic plates than it will on the climate. Actions such as drilling for oil are certain to disrupt the tectonic plates below such sites and, in my opinion, are the cause for the increase in number of devastating earthquakes. Other natural disasters such as tsunamis and volcanic eruptions are liking to become more common if in fact there is an increase in the shifting of such plates. Also, if there is a true change in the earth's temperature, it could be justified by the shifting of the plates causing the poles to start to shift. Such movement would through off the earth's climate and cause hotter summers as well as colder winters. But hey, thats just my opinion.

  21. I would have to say that I think the two are connected because eveything happens for a reason. For some reason or another the weather is the way it is, its not just random acts of nature. Because there are reasons behind things happening, that is how weather men/women can use instruments and things to predict the upcoming weather. Global warming is a thing that we see coming, and are looking to find ways to decrease the negative impacts of it.

  22. To me i do belive that there is a connection between the three, because lately (the past two decades) there has been more disasters then ever before. The climate is going up, more hurricanes, and idk how but there was a whole lot of snow a couple of weeks ago. but its a trend one thing happens, and then another, and another... i wonder when it will all stop?

  23. I disagree with adjective used to describe the weather. I don't actually find it odd or out of place, we are responsible for our actions, we have the ability foresee consequences, and when the weathers affected by what we put out, we act as though we are dumbfounded. I do not believe the weather or global warming is a coincidence! It's the outcome of our actions as human beings and although I guess the nature of our actions could be described as "accidental", scientists have been warning us about global warming for quite some time whether we choose to listen or not. So once we're all informed it is no longer a coincidence. As far as natural disasters go-- for lack of a better adjective, they're natural? I just think it's Earth taking it's natural course whether or not humans are affecting it or not. This Is Jerry Perez from 3rd Period.

  24. This "rise in natural disasters" could just be a result of better technology and better communication. However, if you've noticed that there have been fewer disasterous hurricanes in the past few years, (since Hurricane Katrina). This is proven to be because of El Nino/ La Nina weather systems and cycles. We are currently coming out of a La Nina period, which means that the water temperatures at the equator have been cooler than usual. When this happens, there isn't enough "fuel" for storm systmes coming off of the African coast to become serious storms.

  25. Yes i do, i think the reason for some of the disatorus natural disaster slately is cause of global warming. With the rise of temperature the water tempatures rise causing there to be more hurricanes and even tornadoes. I don't think its just a coincidence that with the rise of tempatures theres also a rise of natural disasters. But yet again natuare has a weird way of working and it could possible be part of a cycle.

  26. I believe the weather and the global warming are all connected. Hurricanes have been stgronger because of stronger winds and warmer waters.
