Week 12: What's in the Water?

Hey Scholars,

Only one more six weeks to go! This week we are looking at air and water pollution. For this weeks blog you will need to retrieve some litmus paper from me in class so that you can test different water sources in and around your house. Post your results here and tell us what source you tested.

Go Get Em!!!

  1. I tested my sink water as well as the water when I used my Brita water filter. The water out of my sink appeared to be slightly more basic. It was a little lighter than an 8, but darker than nuetral. However, when i tested the water using the filter, it came out perfectly nuetral. Bottled water came out nuetral as well.

My results were very similar to Shannon's. My sink water came out slightly basic, with a 8ppt. My bottle water was nuetral, as it should be. Lastly, I tested my toilet water, which was slightly acidic. This could be due to the chemicals used to make the toilet cleaner

I tested a can of diet mountain dew on my fridge and its ph came out to be around 3.5 which isnt surprising because sodas are acidic. Coke, another soda, has a lower ph which is about 2.5 making it more acidic than the diet mountain dew. Lastly, i tested my liquid soap which was quite basic with a ph of about 8.5 or 9.

  4. I tested the water at Andies. I tested the tap water which was nuetral suprisingly (its maysville water afterall). The tirbidity of the dish water was a lot lower than usual and the pH was nuetral. The pH pf the sanitary water was almost nuetral which was alrming. The bleach would have caused the strip to have a basic reading.

  5. I tested my kitchen sink and bathroom sink, which both came out to be somewhat near Shannon's result a little lighter than an 8 a littler more basic than neutral. This isn't surprising really because we do have a filter for our entire house.

I tested the dogs water bowl, it was neutral. I didn't think it would be neutral because of the dogs and any chemicals from inside my house that might affect it also. Then I also tested the pool water, it was neutral also, which it should be.

  7. i tested my sink water and got a green color so that is pretty basic. I also tested the water from the mroning dew off of my car and it came out to be acidic!!!!! pretty cool

  8. I tested the water in one of the fish tanks at my house and compared it to the tap water in my sink. Suprisingly, the water from the fish tank was closer to nuetral than the tap water, which was closer to an 8. I believe that the balance of the ecosystem in the fish tank, such as the algea, fish respritory systems, tank filter and water plants keep the water filtered and clean.

  9. My group tested the parkin lot water and came to the conclusion that the nitrate level was 0. In other words the water was drinkable...but i doubt anyone would drink it because of its turbidity

  10. i would have drank the parking lot water if someone payed me a couple dollars. but i tested different areas in the back of my house and inside. outside of my house the different water locations ended up being the same acidic level content due to the pine needles decomposing in the leaf matter which feeds into the different swamp/marshy ground. i also checked the plant water of the ones using house water and got maybe an 8 for basic.

I tested water sources from my bathroom sink, toilet, kitchen sink, and the filtered water from the refrigerator. All of the water sources were slightly basic with a pH of 8. Since pure water is pH 7, it makes sense that the water that comes into our home will be slightly basic or slightly acidic.

  15. I tested the water in mr. Dillmans class. The water was in his little fishy tank and the water in the sink. The water in the sink was a pH of 8 which is basic. The water in the fishy tank was also a pH of 8.

    My Bathroom Sink: pH-7
    My Bathroom Shower: pH-7
    Kitchen Sink: pH-8
    Outside Hose: pH-8

The different water sources I tested in and around my home proved to be basic and somewhat basic. I was hoping to get these results.

  17. I tested the bottle water in my house and I got around pH 5-6 (I think it was closer to 6); which was a little disturbing.

  18. I tested the water in a pond down by my house and it is acidic which is probably normal considering all the rain that has washed in it and its totally different from my sink water which is basic

  19. Wow this was a shocking thing to do and see. My litmus paper for inside my house was 7.5 more basic than anything, but what was shocking was when i tested it on my creek that runs through my property and eventually runs into the white oak and new river, The litmus paper was 4.5. idk if this was becuas eof acid rain or if someone upstream is dumping directly into it.
