Week 5: Aquatic Diversity....

Scholars,

This week we are discussing aquatic diversity. One of the major impacts that can affect biodiversity of an aquatic ecosystem are Invasive Species. For this weeks post I want you to find a news article discussing an invasive species that has infected an area and post the link (url) to that article.

Happy Hunting

  1. Released aquarium or ornamental species displace native species, carry pathogens, clog waterways, and prey on native species, while others are major agricultural pests, and some, like the lionfish, are a direct danger to humans.

This article talks about how some invasive species such as non-native plants in California are beneficial to certain ecosystems. These non-native plants have become a new source of diet for California's native butterflies.

  4. The article I found is about the invasive species found in the Sonoran Desert aquatic ecosystem. Unfortunately it is found that both intentional and accidental introduction of non-native aquatic species has resulted in severe degradation of Sonoran Desert waters and the species that call these waters their habitat. Such invasive organisms include bullfrogs and crayfish.

  7. Non-Native Snakes Are Taking a Toll on Native Birds, Scientists Find

ScienceDaily (Mar. 10, 2011) — The Everglades National Park in Florida is home to hundreds of species of native wildlife. It has also become the well-established home of the non-native Burmese python -- known to be a predator of native species. Now scientists, for the first time, have conducted a detailed analysis of the avian component of the python's diet and the negative impact the snakes may have on Florida's native birds, including some endangered species.

  9. Alien species huge threat to Africa

giant mimosa — a spiny shrub native to Latin America and introduced to Africa — established itself on the Kafue flood plain in a national park and now covers 3,000 hectares of prime floodplain habitat — fast displacing important indigenous animals, birds and plants from their natural environment.

Also destroying vegetation that is important to the poor indigenous people.

  10. Goats

Invasive herbivores can cause great damage. For example, goats were introduced by sailors to many remote oceanic islands during the age of European seafaring exploration, to provide a source of food when the islands were revisited. Goats introduced to the island of St. Helena in the 16th century eliminated over half the endemic plant species......

  17. This article talks about the ever increasing rate at which species continue to invade aquatic ecosystems. The article focuses on the many invasive species that can be found in the San Francisco Bay such as the freshwater cladocera and small crustaceans such as the water flea Daphnia. The San Francisco Bay is one of the most invaded bodies of water (with 230 exotic species) and is also one of the best studied.

Check out how San Francisco Bay is being affected by these invasive critters and what steps the Bay is taking to keep these species under control:
