Week 6: Is there an Eruption in Natural Disasters?

Hey Scholars!!

Due to some recent occurences, this week's topic is on Geosphere and specifically Natural Disasters and Mineral Mining. My Question for Discussion this week is in the title of this Post. Do you think there is a coincidence between the recent decades Natural Disasters/ Weird Weather and Global Warming? Give your explanation and if you use others research/info. make sure you cite it (properly).

I do think that there is a strong coincidence in the weird weather patterns and global warming because of the carbon dioxide that is depleting our protective ozone layer. This delpletion is mostly caused by pollution. The ozone layer is key to our world because it protects our planet from harmful radiation from the sun. With its depletion, an invisible blanket forms around the planet, trapping heat which can cause the polar caps to melt in an unnatural cycle.

Deep ocean currents are the keys to our entire ecosystem. While the oceans seem vast, small changes in temperature can have enormous, long-lasting effects on weather, food production, and the food chain that humanity depends on for their existence.

I believe there is some kind of correlation between recent natural disasters/weird weather and global warming. As global warming gets worse weird weather patterns and natural disasters become more and more frequent.

  3. I believe that the crazy weather and natural disasters we face correlates to global warming. We cannot say "Yes, global warming is causing all this climatical chaos.", though the trends that have been studied over several years illustrate some correlation. Over the past eleven years, catastrophes have occurred such as Hurricane Katrina, the recent earthquake in Japan, the 2005 tsunami that impacted southern Asia and the insane blizzarding we experienced this past winter.
Based on our actions, we do have an impact on the fluctuation of the earth's temperature and the climates found on the earth, though it is not definite that global warming has a direct correlation on natural disasters. Weather has always been unpredictable though it seems as if the significant role we have had in the processes of global warming may have a larger impact on the weather we receive more than it did decades ago. Whether it's impacted by global warming or not, the earth does whatever it needs to do to sustain itself so if it calls for tsunamis every other year or extreme snowfall in southern North America so be it.

  4. I think global warming has effects on some natural disasters but not all of them. As the temperature increases, glaciers can melt and cause floods and avalanches. An article from The Observer claims, “the disappearance of ice caps will change the pressure acting on the Earth’s crust and set off volcanic eruptions.” The change in pressure has a direct correlation with weather. It is possible for weird weather to occur because low pressures causes air to rise. As the air cools, it condenses into clouds and precipitation.

  5. I personally feel that there is a coincidence between the recent decades Natural Disasters, Weird Weather and Global Warming, because of the turn of events that continue to transpire. When I look at it, I feel that one particular incident can trigger other events, whether or not in the same location. If we really stop and look at it, decades of natural desasters could have possibly taken a toll on the earth, yet, at the same time caused these events to lie dorment until other factors aligned to actually cause the event to now erupt and come to light. Like our bodies, if we have one condition, it can affect one part of the body and then help otehr illnesses and diseases within the body if the initial condition is not corrected or cared for. Therefore, yes, I strongly feel that recent decades Natural disasters, weird weather and Global Warming all tie in together and contribute to other events.

  7. I don't think it is a conicidence, because the earth itself is changing from global warming. Sea levels are rising, natural barriers are taken away by humans, and large masses of land are moving. For tsunamis and earthquakes to occur, there has to have been large shifts of land, which were present. Although it may seem like a conicidence, global warming is not factored out of the reasoning.

  8. I do not think there is any relation between the recent decades weird weather patterns and global warming. Natural disasters happen all the time so I just think everything just happens to be going on at around the same time. I do not think you can help how the planet acts.

  9. I dont think that this is just any ol' coincidence we are facing here. i believe that global warming does have an effect on these many Natural Disasters we are facing in this past decade, and i believe there are many more to come. all of these hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis are events that could lead up to the end of the world, our apocalypse. i have always believed that the end of the world would be triggered by a series of cataclysmic events that would ultimately destroy mankind and all of its creations. so no i do not believe this is coincidence, i believe this is all part of a plan created by our higher power.

  10. I think that it may have something to do with the disasters that have happened. But who is ever going to know for sure? It is just another theory.

  11. No, i just think it is coinsidence honestly and people are blowing it all out of proportion. The earth is just going throught its motions like how are body goes throught the motions of aging and maturing.

  12. I am very opinionated when it comes to the topic of global warming. I a firm believer in the theory that global warming is just a natural cycle. The Earth is currently in an interglacial period, or a period of warming. While I believe the Earth is heating up due to natural causes, i will agree that humans are not helping the situation and may be adding slightly to the heating. As the oceans heat up, hurricanes will naturally occur more. They will also become stronger due to the increased warm water they have available to feed on. We have seen these effects in the past decade. I do not believe global warming is connected to the recent earthquakes.

  13. Well to start off I believe that "Global Warming" is a continuous thing. Scientists have pointed out that we would have warm climates, then an increase in heat, and then cold and then it starts all over again. I just think that human activity has just "sped up the process".

I do believe that there is some sort of connection between global warming (which can bring extreme droughts, rain etc due to temp. fluctuation and air pressure), weird weather, and natural disasters. But i dont think that the climate change causes the disaters and weird weather, just merely influences them a great deal.

But then it could be the factor that we have obtained better technology that can now pinpoint every natural occurence that we couldnt get decades before, and we now just see everything. We wouldnt know about natural disasters like floods in Pakistan in the 1880s or tsunamis in a mere matter of seconds like we can today.

  14. MY POST WAS DELETED AHHHHHHHHH

HERe we go again..short version now
Global warming=continious cycle that has gone on for many many years and has just sped up with the help of human activity (releasing more CO2)

I think there is a connection between global warming ( which can result in extreme rain, droughts etc), weird weather, and the natural disasters. I dont believe that this climate change is the cause for weird weather and natural disasters, I just believe that it influences it greatly (with the increased temp change and air pressure diff)

But then again maybe we are just noticing the weird weather and the "patterned" natural disasters because of the new technology we have obtained. Now we can see the change in weather etc. better than we were able to back in the day

I think it goes without saying that there is a connection between global warming and the recent occurances of natural disasters and spontaneous weather. When considering natural disasters i think about all the harm they can do to the environment, not only taking out massive amounts of buildings, and trees, but what they release into the atmosphere when they do so. Persay, when a nuclear plant is taken out by a natural disaster, it contaminates everything. Water, air, and soil surrouding the area is unsafe. this creates problems in resources that people need to live upon daily, and releases greenhouse gases into the earth, moreso then usual.

Other effects and some of the previously mentioned are discussed here: http://www.seattlepi.com/opinion/336682_amy25.html

  16. I believe that the increase of natural disasters in recent decades does have something to do with global warming. I think that the earth is just undergoing a cycle and the natural disasters are a part of it. Eventually the number will decrease and weather will return to normal.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes to a certain extent I do believe global warming plays a major role in natural disasters. Some things we can’t help like wild fires that are going to happen. Most events are kept in records and help us to make prediction about what could happen. If something is way off the chart I would look into global warming if weather patterns would effect the result into a natural disaster

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that the number of natural disasters and weird weather definitely have something to do with the increase of global warming. In recent decades, global warming has become worse and natural disasters and weird weather are a result from that.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think there might be due to the change in UV rays, which can cause more heat and heat is a direct factor to ocean currents and weather patterns. So global warming can be cause to weather patterns, like rain, sleet and other things. SO there maybe a connection.

  20. I think that based on the correspondence between the technological advances in recent years and the levels of pollution that come with it, there is a definite correlation between extreme weather conditions and global warming. Global warming is the result of the mistakes we've made as humans in selfishly polluting our Earth. Even in its name "global warming" we see the word warm, this is no coincidence. The pollution that we are putting into our atmoshere is causing such big changes that the atmosphere doesn't know what to do with it all, so it gives it back to us. Whether it's in extreme temperature changes from one day to the next, or flooding and drought, the atmoshpere is trying to tell us something. If we as humans would stop caring so much about ourselves for a change and step back and realize what we are doing to our planet, we would have a much better chance at trying to fix the damage we've already done and overall improve our living habits.

  21. I think it somewhat does, but not really, because global warming has to do with an increase in the global climate. Most natural disasters are caused by faults from the earth, not the because climates are getting hotter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. In my opinion, its not a matter of global warming causing debilitating natural disasters its human activity. we are causing sea levels to rise and removing natural barriers such as mangrove forests and coral reefs that soak up alot of tsunami damage. As a result of the loss of these, the damage from tsunamis is alot more then is needed. Alot of natural disasters occur in developing countries due to poor infastructure causing shoddily built buildings and bad health care. This leads to poor use of the land causing flooding and landslides. As of 1992 to present, developing countries have been affected by about half of the natural disasters since then.

  23. I don't think it is a coincidence at all and I believe there are more disasters to come. There may be a scientific pattern such as Earth heating up due to being in a stage of warming, air pressure differences, ozone depletion, etc... but I believe these disasters are part of the plan of our higher power. I, along with others, believe a series of unfortunate disasters will be how our planet ends due to religious purposes.

  24. Post #2.
My theory from the previous post stands.
We will encounter times of peril as a warning that the end of the earth is coming. Not due to environmental issues, but due to issues caused by humans themselves.

this is late but i only have one opinion... so unfortunately i can only blog once.

I think that there is a correlation between the rising temperature and the rise in natural disasters. HOWEVER I do not think it was man made... this was 100% unavoidable. just like the ice ages in the past, the earth is going through a climate change. Granted it may be a little early because of human activity, there is nothing we could have done to prevent this. all we can do is prepare for it to get worse.

  26. I have mixed feelings.
Although they are both occurring in the same decade I do not think that global warming is causing the natural disasters. I think that the earth just needs a release for all the stress we are putting it under, and so it is freaking out.

  27. I think that because our earth is a closed system everything that happens creates an effect. Everything is correlated. It is possible that increased temperature made sea levels rise which caused something else to happen further disrupting our earth. There has to be a reason for all of these natural disasters from earthquakes in China to tornadoes in jacksonville.

Honestly, I don't think the weather is any weirder than it's always been. Weather has always been weird and unpredictable and so forth. I feel like there isn't any correlation. If I could jump into my AP Statistic terminology I would say there are lurking variables going unnoticed. In my book, it's all coincidental.

  29. personally I don't believe there is a connection between global warming and the strange weather because the weather like many other things can't be easily predicted and for someone to say that an occurrence of nature is unnatural is rather silly. That, and that it snowed in North Carolina.

  30. In my opinion, I believe that weather, or at least it's severity and impact is random. Long before the industrial revolution, mankind, and other species faced similar hardships to the ones that we have faced in more recent times.

For example, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed and completely buried the city of Pompeii in modern-day Italy. In addition, other ancient disasters such as the Damghan Earthquake can be noted for it's destructive reign on Iran.

Although there may seem to have been a fair amount of disasters in history, I think in more recent times, the frequency at which we see these disasters has increased. This could because of modern advances in which information is distributed at a faster pace.

  31. There has to be. We are causing Global Warming and it's messing up climates in all places. We are changing patterns that ultimately cause messed up disasters. North Carolina was hit with 64 tornadoes. That just doesn't happen. Arizona had a blizzard a couple of years back. IT'S THE DESERT!
