Hey Scholars,
This week's topic is Solid and Hazardous Waste. We talked briefly about Sustainable Dave and his quest to keep his trash for a year. This week's online assignment is to post a relative comment on sustainable dave's blog:

"This is really great! Human ignorance is what prevents many from putting forth efforts to save the environment. The conditions we are facing now- and will be facing very soon- could easily be preventable."
I like the option of being able to donate your old phones to US soldiers who could get a better use out of them. :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Mr Dillman,
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you are still sharing my project with your students! Thanks so much. Would love to connect sometime. Shoot me an email through the site if you'd like.

Crytal castle- And to think all of those bottles could be siting in a landfill! This is a very unique, artsy, and GREEN way to recycle! My only question is how the house has privacy.. considering you can see through all the walls! Awesome idea though, and a great way to raise awareness.
ReplyDeleteI have actually just recently stopped buying bottled water every morning for school. It has helped me save a lot of money already. instead of buying a bottle and reusing it( which i know is not the healthiest thing to do), I use a BPA free portable, plastic water bottle. It even has the words reduce, reuse and recycle on it. Ironically the bottle is also green. I have found that it is more convenient to fill the bottle up than to go buy one everyday.
ReplyDeleteI posted about the 10 places to safely Donate Cell Phones:
ReplyDeleteI like the way that instead of throwing out the phones in an unmannerly way, there is an alternative. Here I thought that if I would just put my old cell phone to the store, that it would be taken care of. There are many things that go behind this. I would rather give it to a better cause such as giving them to the soliders once they are fixed and usable again. I know when my dad was overseas, it would have been nice for him to have a cell phone so that he could call us whenever he wanted to. Now that times have changed...drastically, I would like to have more families take advantage of sending the phones to the troops so that instead of going weeks with out talking, due to lacking a phone, to days. These top ten ideas are really an eye opener that anyone will be able to do! Thank you for pointing them out to the public! :)

Don't Throw Out Those Old Cellphones!
ReplyDelete"I think donating old cell phones is a great idea! This allows us to help out in many ways including, donating to charities, helping out unfortunate people who can't afford cell phones, and especially allows us to keep these unwanted electronics from overloading dump sites that can harm the environment and the people around them."

Stop drinking bottled water article: Wow, those are some interesting facts about plastic bottles that I had no idea of. Who knew all that money was coming to a waste with buying these products. I will take a better approach from now on when buying these plastic bottles. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHopefully soon all of the cars in America and the world will be able to predominantly run on electricity.
ReplyDelete"No longer need some CDs or have some old diskettes, drop them in the box. Dead cell phones, mystery cables, old tapes - don't throw them in the trash can - throw them in the Technotrash Can!"

This Holiday Season, Give Kiva Instead!
ReplyDeleteI think the whole Kiva thing is a great idea. One person can give the gift from Kiva & a whole lot of people can benefit from it. In the process, products that just sit in a landfill aren't being wasted.

This is my post on Dave's blog about stopping the use of plastic bags.
ReplyDeleteHello Dave,
I am a student in Mr.Dillman's AP Earth/Environmental class, and i just wanted to say that what your doing is amazing and very inspirational. On the topic of this video, I just wanted to say that my family has many reusable grocery bags, however, I don't think we have ever actually reused them. (They pretty much just stay in trunk or in our pantry.) After watching this video, I think I might start pushing my parents to use them. Why not make some money while saving the environment???
I've commented on the paper water bottles post... and of course forgot that when i click "publish" it goes away for authorization. I'll have it us here asap.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of donating your old cell phones for a better cause. When you thimk about how much cell phones are being discarded every day, these options are helpful to other people so why not donate your old phone instead of just throw it away? its helping the environment and our troops, elderly, and etc.
ReplyDeleteby donating your phone i also think you will feel good knowing that you are contributing to a good cause.

Wow I didn't realize there were so many easy and simple ways to reduse using those plastic bags. It really is a bummer that it's so expensive to be more eco-friendly. I don't think any place here has a program that if you use a reusable bag you get money for it though so that's a problem with not encouraging to use them. Very informative and helping video though!

ReplyDeleteDave,
Im a student at white oak high school and north carolina. Ive been following your blog and I think it is quite amazing what you have been doing. I really never noticed how much plastic harms the environment. I buy water bottles all the time, I guess I buy them because its cheap and convienent. Also the water has already been filtered. But i recently found out that there are water tin bottles that have a filter through the straw I just want you to know that I am informed about what something as simple as a water bottle can do the the environment and I will try to change my bad habits. Thanks for informing people. You are making a change.

I would look at this step as more of a productive stepping stone than a full out answer. Everyone already knows the answer, found (in more developed countries) through the steel water bottles and their refills. Unfortunately, one of the things that plastic water bottles still has over the refill is the ease of buying a new one. If a person is at a sporting event or is out driving all the time, the easiest thing seems to be to buy a new plastic bottle when the old one runs out. Going into a covenience store, there is no tap water refill station, unless you fancy trusting the bathrooms sanitation. While some people may not have an issue with that, there are just as many who choose not to trust a public place's sanitation. So while the present "need" persists for quick and easy water bottles, I think that the interlocking paper water bottles are rather ingenius.

ReplyDeleteThis video was funny and made sense! I really like the feeling of inspiration to do better using a hit song to spread the word out!

Dave,
ReplyDeleteYour blog has really shown me the negative effects of drinking bottled water. I plan on buying an ecofriendly water bottle that will keep me from using so many plastic bottles
