Hey Scholars,
This week's topic is global climate change. The current scientific view point is that our climate is slowly warming. Prior to this current belief, there were scholars that thought we were headed for an ice age. Even movies such as The Day After Tomorrow depict this. This week we will reinforce Science's Current Perspective but for this week's post I want you to find alternate opinions on this subject. Post the link where you found your info.

While looking for alternatives to global warming ideas I found this one. That the earth goes through both warming and cooling periods. This source believes that when the earth gets too hot, a reversal in magnetic fiels will cause it to swith to a cooling period and vice versa for when it gets too cold. "When global warming is great enough, then the electrons will tend to migrate closer to the surface of the earth where the observer is located. When the electrons are at the surface of the earth then there is no relative motion between the observer and the electrons and no magnetic field will be produced by these electrons. In order for charges to produce a magnetic field there has to be relative motion between the observer and the charges. If the charges and the observer are at the same distance from the center of the earth, then there is no relative motion, in spite of the fact that they are both rotating at a high speed. Now electrons are not expected to migrate to the surface but rather will move towards the surface with a resulting decrease in magnetic field. By the same token, the positive charges which are locked into position at or near the center of the earth will experience a large relative motion which will produce a large magnetic field due to their high relative velocity. If the magnetic field is decreasing with an increasing of internal heat of the earth, then one can expect a reversal of the earth's magnetic field. This could occur within a decade, a century, or a millennium."

While I personally believe that the earth is warming there is a lot of controversy in the scientific community about this topic. I found this survey conducted by the Yale school of Forestry and Environmental Studies that shows the opinions of the scientist that were surveyed.

This link shows the case against global warming. It highlights the fact that while the arctic is melting; Antarctica is actually growing in its ice shelf. And also that while urban temperatures are really high, that may be a result of a heat island resulting from all the concrete in the city and that satellite measures of temperature show that they are well within the natural range.

This article talks about the theory that an astroid struck the earth that caused a massive change in the water content of Earth's atmosphere. This "event" which they call the Tungston Event, caused the most important greenhouse gas, water, to increase in the atmosphere causing a steady increase in global temperatures.

In 2009, Greg Murphy and Laurence Hecht wrote an article about how a lower amount of solar activity is the reason why regions in the Northern Hemisphere were cooler than other parts of the world. Some would say this is a flaw in the debate on climate change. However, this is why we need to understand that global warming is not an evenly spread issue worldwide.

ReplyDeleteIn this article they are saying that global warming is not true and we are just freaking out over nothing. I personally believe it is happening but I think that it is not all the humans fault. Although we do take a lot of blame I think the world just goes through these stages and maybe we are just reaching the hotter stage a little sooner than expected.

Keith Foster has a theory that pinpoints the key reason for a climate change has something else. It says that ice deposits will add up in the South Pole due to wobbling and magnetic activity of the Earth, increasing the permittivity of water making it freeze more easily. The asymmetry of ice will change the momemntum stored in the Earth causing ice melting and volcanoes. At the same time the magnetic fields of the sun will reverse and will in turn reverse the magnetic fields in the Earth and cause climate warmup.

One scientist, Doug L. Hoffman, claims that human activity which prodcues Co2 may actually be a negative feedback loop instead of a positive feed back loop which cause temperature rise. Based on a recent study water vapor is more responsible for global warming than Co2 is. He says that Co2 released into the atmosphere causes water vapor to lower from the stratosphere to an area closer to the earths surface. This would make the earths temperature lower because infared rays are able to escape the upper stratosphere more freely.

ReplyDeleteThis article discusses a man, the head of space research at St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, and his thoughts on global warming. Another man is quoted as saying that that explanation is ridiculous and impossible.
