Week 13: Biological Hazards to Human Health

Hey Scholars!!

I hope your break was full of food and rest. Last week we discussed Human Health risks. For this week's Post I would like you to choose a Biological Human Health Hazards (Pathogen), such as a viral or bacterial disease and post the symptoms, who is most affected, how it is contracted, and how to fight the hazard.

Have a great week back!!!

Mr. D

PS: The AP Exam decision is getting closer!

  1. The bacterial pathogen Lyssavirus (genus)of the Rhabdoviridea family (Order Mononegavirales). This pathogen is well known for causing rabies.

    The Rabies Virus produces:
1)Flu-Like Symptons from two to twelve weeks, but can continue for up to two years.
    2)Partial Paralysis, 3)Cerebral Dysfunction, 4)Anxiety, 5)Insomnia, 6)Agitation, 7)Abnormal Behavior, 8)Terror, 9)Paranoia, 10)Hallucinations, 11)Delirium, and 12) Death

The Rabies virus has around a 8% survival rate, and the humans that do survive usually end up with severe brain damage.

Prevention: Vaccinations for humans and widespread vaccination of domesticated cats and dogs. Vaccines had dropped the numbers of death by a huge amount, as it is only down to 1-2 deaths per year. Those deaths are most likey from bat bites, inwhich the person that was bit did not notice.

  2. Bacillus anthracis is a bacterium that causes anthrax. It is found on almost every continent in some quantity and can be found in endospore form in soil where it can lay dormant for years at a time. Everyone can be infected but people who deal with the bodies of animals. It is contracted by inhalation of the spores and the ingestion of infected animal meat. Anthrax is being used as a biological weapon in many countries around the world as well. There is not much you can do to fight the hazard of anthrax because it does not have any specialized niche and can be found almost anywhere.

  3. Cholera Disease:

    Symptoms:
    severe watery diarrhea
    vomiting
    then dehydration

    Who is affected:
Haitians at the moment. People in countries without proper water treatments.

    How is it contracted:
By eating food or drinking water contaminated by feces from a person with the infection.

    How is it treated:
No real treatment at the moment all doctors can do is hydrate a person infected and give so antibiotics to slow the diarrhea.

  4. Chicken Pox
An airborne disease that is easily spread through coughing or sneezing from sick persons or through direct contact with secretions from the rash. Mostly effects the very young since it is very hard to contract twice. There is a chickenpox vaccine if you want it but to fight off the chickenpox you just have to wait it out and try not to itch.

The Ebola Virus symptoms include fever, muscle pain, headache, and inflammation of the pharynx. Six days following vomiting and bloody diarrhea, individuals could develop maclopapular rash with bleeding at needle sites and body orifices. This virus can be transmitted through body fluids; the handling of dead animals and is highly infectious. People that work with animals are the most vulnerable seeing as animals carry it. You can fight this hazard by having basic hygiene; and getting a vaccine.

SARS stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

    Symptoms:
Early stage - Flu like symptoms,High fever,Chills, Shivering, Rigor, Headache, Malaise, Body aches, Muscle aches, Mild respiratory symptoms, and Diarrhea
Low respitory stage - Dry nonproductive cough, Shortness of breath, Difficulty breathing, Hypoxia, Hypoxemia, Pneumonia, Acute respiratory distress syndrome, Focal interstitial infiltrates on lung x-rays - in early respiratory phase, Generalized, patchy, interstitial infiltrates on lung x-rays - in later respiratory phase, Areas of consolidation on lung x-rays - in later respiratory phase

Contraction: Transmission of an infectious agent by another person by one or more of the following: saliva, air, cough, fecal-oral route, surfaces, blood, needles, blood transfusions, sexual contact, mother to fetus, etc. Read more at

People most at risk: Children and the Elderly

How to fight SARS: Treatments similar to atypical pneumonia, Antiviral agents, Oseltamivir, Ribavirin, Oral steroids, Intravenous steroids, Steroid and ribavirin combination, Steroids and other antimicrobials, Intubation, Mechanical ventilation - needed in about 10-20% of cases, Isolation, Anti-transmission protocols including standard, contact, and airborne precautions

Many viral diseases are transferred through blood and other bodily fluids like semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk. For example, HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis B and C. It affects the people who have it that have contact with others, like people who have sex and don't tell their partners they have it, or when women have babies, and then their babies are born with it.

The symptoms can vary, because the illnesses people with AIDS/HIV get are ones from bacteria and viruses that come from the failing immune system that AIDS/HIV causes. To prevent the spread of AIDS/HIV, people with it need to not come into close contact with uninfected people. They also need to be not allowed to reproduce.

  10. Strep Throat
    Symptoms:
Severe and sudden sore throat without coughing, sneezing, or other cold symptoms.
    Pain or difficulty with swallowing.
Fever over 101F. Lower fevers may indicate a viral infection and not strep.
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
White or yellow spots or coating on the throat and tonsils .
    most affected:
usually school kids kids under 3 usually do not get it
    contracted:
Strep Throat is transmitted directly from person to person by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Very occasionally strep throat is passed through food, when a food handler infected with strep throat accidentally contaminates food by coughing or sneezing.
    how to fight:
There is really no way to prevent getting strep throat. Some of the common ways to help prevent getting strep throat are: covering her mouth when she sneezes to keep from spreading the bacteria; wash their hands after sneezing, blowing their noses, and before cooking or eating; wash dishes, drinking glasses, and knives, forks, and spoons in hot, soapy water; and keep sores and cuts clean.

  18. Anthrax:
caused by exposure to the spores of the bacteria Bacillus anthracis that become entrenched in the host body and produce lethal poisons. It is primarily a disease of grazing animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Cutaneous (skin) anthrax causes a characteristic sore on the skin and results from exposure to the spores after handling sick animals or contaminated animal wool, hair, hides, or bone meal products. Inhalational anthrax results from breathing anthrax spores into the lungs. People who handle animal hides infested with spores may develop inhalational anthrax, known as woolsorter's disease. Once inhaled, the organisms multiply and may spread their toxins to the bloodstream and many other organs. Infection may spread from the liver, spleen, and kidneys back into the bloodstream, thus causing an overwhelming infection and death. Gastrointestinal anthrax results from eating meat products that contain anthrax. Gastrointestinal anthrax is difficult to diagnose. It can produce sores in the mouth and throat.

  19. I'm choosing meningitis because its a disease that truly fascinates me. Oh my gosh I sound kinda like a science nerd for a third time in my life. (just kidding) but i'm going to focus on the BACTERIAL meningitis. Essentially, it is the swelling of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The swelling occurs due to the presence of bacteria. It is serious and can be fatal. It's more likely to occur in children and young adults. If death doesn't occur, it is more than possible a limb will be amputated, or brain damage or kidney failure will be caused. There's a vaccination for it. YAY! It's transmitted through air droplets and direct contact; it's extremely contagious. At first meningitis seems like the average flu, so a improper diagnosis may occur. It's very very interesting.

Reusing water after it has been used for chemicals use.

Since it is rare that most the chemicals aren't cleaned, some symptoms could be disfiguration, it all depends on the chemical that has been reused.

Humans would be mostly affected. Most reused water is used in water fountains and toilets and many other accessories.

You become affected with it just by drinking it and intaking it into your system.

The only way that you can fight this hazard is if you visibly see weird colors or if the water companies clean the water much better.

I did mine on Mad Cow Disease

Mad cow disease, which is scientifically known as 'Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy' (BSE), is an ailment that affects the central nervous system of cattle. This dangerous disease can also be found in human beings and is known as variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (vCJD). The name is taken from the names of the two physicians who discovered the existence of this disease.

***Noticeable effects in humans don't show until 2-8 years***

-The earliest symptoms of mad cow disease in humans include depression, insomnia and anxiety. The person may look withdrawn and seem to be always in a confused state of mind. One would be able to notice significant changes in the personality and behavior of the individual. He/she may also experience muscle spasms, i.e. involuntary muscle contractions that are very painful.
-As the condition of the person suffering from mad cow disease worsens, he/she loses muscle control and coordination, and may also face some problems involving vision and memory. He/she may start having a blurred vision, and also start forgetting people and things that they do in their daily life. It is also usual to experience a tingling sensation on the feet, hands, face and legs of the individual who has mad cow disease.
-As the condition of the patient worsens, he may develop dementia and all his mental and physical functions will become weak. During the final stages of the ailment, the patient may go into a coma which finally leads to death. A person reaches the final stage within 6 months to one year after the inception of the symptoms.

My next one is the staph infection MRSA

Staph skin infections, including MRSA, generally start as small red bumps that resemble pimples, boils or spider bites. These can quickly turn into deep, painful abscesses that require surgical draining. Sometimes the bacteria remain confined to the skin. But they can also burrow deep into the body, causing potentially life-threatening infections in bones, joints, surgical wounds, the bloodstream, heart valves and lungs.
