Week 2: Scientific Ecological Studies

Hey Scholars!!!

For this weeks topic we are discussing Science and Ecology and your online task for this week is post a summary of an on-going Scientific study on an ecological topic of your choice. Make sure to post the link of where you found your info. Have a great week!

  1. One ongoing Scientific study is on global warming. This issue has been studied for years. It is proven that global warming is induced by humans. Some people even believe it is the biggest threat to our environment. Global Warming even makes it hard for some ecosystems to adapt naturally. The biggest things you can do to prevent global warming is to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

  2. Diseases in Wildlife
Sometimes humans come into contact with wild animals who have infectious diseases. By not studying the egological effect that the diseases have on humans, it can cause a dramatic decrease in our own population. For example, there is Giardia Infection, which is a parasite associated with animals and their environment, including water. Also, There is a disease called Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis, which is a viral disease from rodents/house mice. Investigating the causes of these can help humans be aware when exploring though nature.

At Yosemite National Park, there is an ongoing scientific research due to declining animal species studies, invasive plant removal strategies, and human carrying capacity issues. The park serves as a public meeting place for scientific topics to include fire science, hydroclimatology, archeology, and bird surveys. This park is an ongoing scientific study because of the sustainability of the resources found in the park.

  5. Ecological Topic: Bird Conservation
Ornithologists and many non government organizations and non profit organizations study the number of species, the amount of birds and how birds act in a certain area. Birds are very easy to study and lead to further discoveries in nature. Birds indicate the overall health of an environment. They also study bird eggs and the breeding habitats to keep an eye on the bird populations.

  6. Growing Artificial Meat in Labs to End Hunger

A developmental biologist and tissue engineer, Dr. Mironov, 56, is involved in bioengineering cultured meat. He believes this product will eventually help solve the global food crisis. The only problems he faces are funding and whether or not the product will be socially acceptable based on the fact that it is produced in a lab. It will be called "charlem" for Charleston engineered meat.

The process:"Dr. Mironov has taken myoblasts -- embryonic cells that develop into muscle tissue -- from turkey and bathed them in a nutrient bath of bovine serum on a scaffold made of chitosan (a common polymer found in nature) to grow animal skeletal muscle tissue."

Cultured meat could eventually become cheaper than producing meat traditionally, on farms. Scientists claim cultured meat could also have future benefits. For example, if we have and interplanetary exploration, we would need meat in space, and you simply cannot take a cow to space with you.

Summary: This study was looking at the bones of birds. According to palentology, they had three digits (labeled 1, 2, and 3). However, they decided, based on embryonic research, that they were to be labeled 2, 3, and 4.

  10. Yosemite National Park has an on-going study in the national park about the decline of certain species in specific regions of the park. With over 100 employees designated to this cause the park has concluded that certain plant in the park prohibit the inhabitants of small insects. Ants are one of the major insects that live in only two of the five regions of the park due to the population of certain plants. The parks scientist say that the information they are discovering is helping the growth of many other forest around the country.

  12. Tomas Carlo and Jason Gleditsch studied how invasive fruiting plants affect ecosystems. Their goal is to return an area to its original state by using non native plants. For their experiment, they sectioned off an area called Happy Valley region in central Pennsylvania. In this area, there is a abundance of honeysuckle, a fruiting plant that is invasive. They found that the honeysuckle and bird communities have formed a symbiotic relationship.

This past week one of the concepts we studied was that of extinction. I came across this article that addresses the issue of the endangered fossa cat, the largest carnivore on the island of Madagascar. The thing that caught my attention is that this animal will soon be extinct due to the increasing loss of their habitat yet they have not been listed as an endangered species. A large question concerning the fossa cat is whether there will be anymore of them by the end of this year. These cats play an important role in their environment by contributing to population control but if they are extinct, madagascar will see a definite increase in the populations of the organisms of lower trophic levels.

  18. Bird conservation has been a national priority in the United States since the early 1900s, when scientific evidence showed that humans could negatively impact the long-term sustainability of bird populations. Recent findings indicate that a third of North America's bird populations declined during the last half of the 20th century, so there is clearly a continued need for bird conservation at local, state, regional, national and continental scales.

  20. The ecological study I chose to discuss was one dealing with barred owls. These owls were the subject of a series of studies run by graduate students from UNC-Charlotte. The first student who began the study looked at habitat characteristics, home range, and prey habits of barred owls. He found that males use a much larger home range than females. The next graduate student studies reproductive success rates between country and suburban birds, but did not find a statistically significant difference. A third student compared the diets of country owls to those of suburban owls. He found that country owls eat more insects and small amphibians, while city owls consume a large quanity of birds.

Exactly what caused this tremendous loss in biodiversity remains a mystery, but now a team led by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has discovered new details supporting the idea that the mass extinction was linked to a cooling climate

This park focuses on resource management and science functions within the division of resource management and science. It has an organizational structure that combines resource managers with scientists to create an environment where science is used directly in decision-making, thereby addressing the concerns of various groups that have criticized the National Park Service.

Therefore, world must do everything that's necessary to stop deforestation of rainforests, especially Amazon rainforest because if we lose our rainforests climate change impact will be much stronger, and temperatures will rise much faster.

  30. Parasitological study of some frugivorous bird species, whose conservation this research project also aims to, will be undertaken in this part of the work. Except for Hari, no published work is available in the case of avian parasites of Bangladesh. Parasite fauna of even closely related host species exhibit high degree of individuality. No two species of a single genus, of a helminth, generally occur in one habitat, host intestine. However, when they do they obviously utilize different niche conditions and resources. This demonstrates uniqueness of the microenvironment, which together with macro-environmental aspects make important problem of parasite biology and ecology to study. This parasitological work will give a new dimension to the biological and ecological study of the bird species, which seem, presently, to need conservation support.

Global warming is a huge impact on our environment. It is a continuous on going scientific study. There is an ongoing build up of human impacted greenhouse gases. The warnings of this issue is becoming louder and louder. Our society needs top start doing things to reduce global warming such as carpooling, turning electric appliances off, and paying attention to the products they buy at the store such as hairspray. Global warming will remain a huge controversy until our society all work together toward bettering our environment.

  33. ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2011) — Climate researchers at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association (AWI) expand a prevalent theory regarding the development of ice ages. In the current issue of the journal Nature three physicists from AWI's working group "Dynamics of the Palaeoclimate" present new calculations on the connection between natural insolation and long-term changes in global climate activity. Up to now the presumption was that temperature fluctuations in Antarctica, which have been reconstructed for the last million years on the basis of ice cores, were triggered by the global effect of climate changes in the northern hemisphere.
