Week 3: Scientific Ecological Studies

Hey Scholars!!!

For this weeks topic we are discussing Science and Ecology and your online task for this week is post a summary of an on-going Scientific study on an ecological topic of your choice. Make sure to post the link of where you found your info. Have a great week!

A current study on our early human ancestors may suggest that we were close to extinction one million years ago. A study on the population of the early humans one million years ago show new evidence that might suggest our genetic diversity faced a major setback a long time ago. Scientist are now studying ancient DNA to see if any more evidence appears.

It is a study of how creating offshore wind turbines would affect the environment of the oceans around them. The wind turbines have been shown to have adverse affects on the environment.

This is a study on genes in plants. A new gene called Spatula was found in plants. It limits the growth of the plants in cool weather which helps them to adjust in cool conditions. This study could help in the growth of plant productions in the future, helping future populations survive.

Canine diarrhea is very common when canine's only water source is contaminated. There has been a study on a more efficient quicker way to kill the bacteria causing the bacteria. The advanced probiotic-prebiotic has been used in humans to stop diarrhea and scientist have tried it in dogs recently and it has worked very effectivly. This is a great break through especially for dog breeders to stop the out break of diarrhea in a big group of dogs.

There has been a study recently involving factors in the extinction of organisms and predicting the "tipping point." The experiment involved water fleas, assigned to a deteriorating environment or a stable environment. After the experiment ended, the scientist looked at statistical data and factors that could predict the "tipping point." Although still in theory, scientist believe that more studys could lead to endless applications involving the thoery of critical slowing down.

  9. Several generations of an aphid population, for example, might exist on a single leaf. Inside each of those aphids exist diverse communities of bacteria. Tree growth is relates to site variables, such as soil type, moisture content, slope of the land, and forest canopy closure. However, such as climate, might be considered for forest landscape.

The "fourth international polar year" has just ended and aparently the current situation of the polar ecosystem is "alarming". Scientist's are currently looking into it to determine if this change is a precursor to change in warmer climates.

  12. Most solar panels use silicon based solar cells. The silicon is what makes solar panels less efficient since the silicon acts as the energy harvester and the electron transporter. In photosynthesis, chlorophyll acts as the harvester and other mechanisms transport the electron. Solar panels using plastic photovoltaics would be more efficient because it would more closely imitate photosynthesis.

Phasing out the human race by voluntarily ceasing to breed will allow Earth’s biosphere to return to good health. Crowded conditions and resource shortages will improve as we become less dense.

This is an article about a study which surveys the behavior of wildfires. The goal of the experiment is to find a more mathematical/physics oriented way to control fires versus the physical way. [water] Pretty much they set this tower on fire, [wildfire style, grass included] which they had hooked up with cameras and measuring gadgets that would send data to laptops at a different location. Pretty neat stuff.

This website shows a study that started in 2003 and is still going. It's studies on baseline wildlife, for example, vegetation, plants and animals, wetlands, and the like. These studies are occuring because it must be made sure that mine places don't cause problems with the wildlife around them. Nature comes first because it was here first.
